What triglycerides are (and why they matter)
Triglycerides are the most abundant type of fat there is, both in the body and in food, and they serve a perfectly useful purpose: they are the way the body stores the calories it does not spend at the moment. When you eat more energy than you need, the body converts it into triglycerides and stores it in fatty tissue to draw on later. The problem, therefore, is not that they exist, but having chronically high levels circulating in the blood. Elevated triglycerides are associated with greater cardiovascular risk and, when very high, with a real risk of pancreatitis. The key to understanding them — and what sets them apart from cholesterol — is that they reflect much more directly what you eat and drink: they are, in a way, a mirror of your recent diet.
What pushes them up: sugar, flour and alcohol
Here is the big difference from cholesterol, and the reason triglycerides respond so well to diet. Although any excess of calories raises them, three culprits weigh far more than the rest. The first is sugar and refined carbohydrates: sugary drinks, juices, sweets, pastries, white bread and flour. The body quickly converts that excess sugar into triglycerides, so a diet loaded with sweets and refined foods sends them soaring. The second is alcohol, to which triglycerides are especially sensitive. And the third, in the background, is excess weight and a sedentary lifestyle. Against the idea that "the fat in your blood comes from the fat you eat", in the case of triglycerides the main villain is, curiously, sugar.
When they are high: the numbers
To orient you, these are the usual reference ranges for triglycerides in the blood (measured fasting). They are indicative: the person who should interpret them, along with the rest of the test and your personal situation, is your doctor.
- Normal: below 150 mg/dL.
- Borderline high: between 150 and 199 mg/dL.
- High: between 200 and 499 mg/dL.
- Very high: 500 mg/dL or more (added risk of pancreatitis).
- The logic: above 150 it is worth acting; the higher, the more urgent.
The diet that lowers them
The strategy to lower triglycerides has two equally important sides: what to add and what to remove. On the positive side, oily fish rich in omega-3 (the nutrient that lowers them best) takes the crown, along with soluble fibre from oats and legumes, healthy fats such as olive oil, nuts and avocado, and all vegetables. On the negative side, and here is the half that is hardest, you have to firmly cut sugar and sugary drinks, sweets and pastries, white bread and flour, and alcohol. Omega-3: the specific ally of triglycerides
If there is one nutrient with a name and surname for triglycerides, it is omega-3. Unlike other general advice, here the evidence is fairly specific: the omega-3 fatty acids in oily fish reduce triglyceride levels, and they do so more markedly the higher they start. That is why one of the most repeated recommendations is to eat oily fish — salmon, sardine, mackerel, anchovy, tuna — two or three times a week. It is a cheap, tasty, well-backed intervention. In specific cases of very high triglycerides, the doctor may even prescribe high-dose omega-3 as treatment, but that is already clinical territory. The warning: very high, pancreas and medication
It is worth separating two scenarios. For most people with borderline or moderately high triglycerides, diet and lifestyle changes are very effective and often enough to get back in range. But when triglycerides are very high — especially from 500 mg/dL — the matter stops being just dietary: at that level the risk of pancreatitis rises, an inflammation of the pancreas that can be serious, and the goal of treatment includes preventing it. In those cases, on top of diet, the doctor may consider medication. It is also worth ruling out underlying causes (diabetes, thyroid). So the rule is clear: diet is your first and best tool, but very high triglycerides need a medical eye, not self-management.
Beyond the plate: weight, exercise and consistency
Diet is the main lever, but it does not act alone. Losing weight, even moderately, lowers triglycerides notably, because it reduces the amount of fat the liver puts into circulation. Regular physical activity has a direct effect: it helps "burn" triglycerides and improves how the body handles sugar, tackling the problem at its root. It does not take a heroic plan; walking daily, moving more and keeping it up over time already makes the difference. And since triglycerides respond fast, they are one of those rewarding markers: a few weeks of less sugar and alcohol, more oily fish and more movement usually show up clearly in the next test.
