How does the scanner work?

  1. 1

    You take a photo

Of the whole plate, from above, in decent light. No need to separate ingredients or arrange anything: the plate as you are about to eat it works fine.

  2. 2

    The AI identifies and estimates

It recognises the foods, estimates how much of each is there, and works out calories, protein, carbs and fat. It takes about five seconds.

  3. 3

    You get the breakdown

With a health score for the plate and the reasoning behind it. That is where the demo ends: nothing is saved and no account is needed.

Where it gets things wrong, plainly

The hard part is not recognising that there is rice: it is knowing how much rice. Portion size is estimated from the photo, and that is where most of the error lives in any scanner, ours included. A thick sauce, a deep bowl or a steep camera angle all make the estimate worse. That is why we publish our average error instead of promising round accuracy, and why you can correct the amount by hand when you know what you weighed.

FAQ

Do I need to sign up to try it?

No. This demo works with no account, no email and no card. You upload a photo and see the result. The one thing it does not do is save it: for history, streaks and a daily target you do need an account.

How many scans do I get here?

The demo allows one scan per visitor every 24 hours. Each analysis has a real AI cost and we would rather say so than fund it with ads. Inside the app there is no such limit.

Does it work with home cooking and local dishes?

Yes, and that is exactly where catalogue apps stall. Because it starts from the photo rather than a product list, it does not depend on the dish existing in a database: your mother’s stew gets estimated the same way a tin does.

What happens to my photo?

It is processed to give you the analysis. What is stored, for how long and why is set out in the privacy policy — and if you turn on training consent, you are asked explicitly and it is off by default.
