What happens in the luteal phase (in one sentence)

After ovulation the empty follicle becomes the corpus luteum and starts producing progesterone. That progesterone raises body temperature, favours water retention and — this is the part you notice — comes with more appetite. It lasts about 14 days and ends with your period. It is the most stable part of the cycle in length: when a cycle runs long, it is usually the follicular phase that stretches, not this one.

The hunger is real, and it has a number

This is the part of cycle syncing that DOES hold up. The systematic review with meta-analysis by Tucker et al. (2024) found significantly higher energy intake in the luteal phase than in the follicular one, with a raw mean difference of 168 kcal a day. It is not a feeling and it is not a discipline problem: it is the measured average difference between the two halves of the month.

Metabolism rises less than you have been told

This is where nearly everyone exaggerates — ourselves included, until recently. The figure that circulates ("metabolism rises 5-10%") comes from Webb (1986), who measured 9% more 24-hour expenditure — in TEN women, forty years ago. When the literature on RESTING metabolism is pooled, the effect is small (ES 0.33) and, looking only at studies published since 2000, it shrinks until it is no longer statistically significant (Benton et al., 2020).

  • That something rises: probably yes
  • That it rises enough to reorganise your diet: there is no basis for saying so
  • The INTAKE difference (168 kcal) is better documented than the EXPENDITURE one — that is, we know you eat more with more confidence than we know you burn more

What does not hold up: cycling your macros

The argument cycle syncing sells is that in the luteal phase you 'burn more fat' and should therefore shift your macronutrient split. The systematic review with meta-analysis by D'Souza et al. (2023) found no difference in RELATIVE carbohydrate or fat oxidation between phases, at rest or during acute aerobic exercise. And the primary studies do not even agree: Willett et al. (2021) found slightly less carbohydrate oxidation in the luteal phase, while Horton et al. (2002), with a stricter design, found none at all.

The kilos that show up before your period

They go up on the scale and they are not fat: they are water. They disappear by themselves in the first days of bleeding. The real problem is not the retention, it is what we do with it — weighing yourself on exactly those days, seeing the highest number of the month and concluding the diet is useless. The fix is boring and it works: always compare the same point in the cycle, month against month, not day against day.

If you train: less drama than it looks

Your core temperature in the luteal phase is 0.3 to 0.7 degrees higher (Baker et al., 2020). That sounds like a lot until it is measured during exercise in the heat: there the real difference was 0.2 degrees, and it came with no extra sweating, no extra dehydration and no worse perceived effort (Christison et al., 2025). Measuring heat exchange with reference methods, total heat loss was statistically EQUIVALENT between phases (Kirby et al., 2024).

  • The number that puts it all in perspective: in a model explaining 60% of the variation in peak core temperature, oestradiol explained 4% — and the temperature you STARTED at explained 41% (Zheng et al., 2022)
  • Translation: arriving fresh and hydrated matters ten times more than which phase you are in
  • And if you take hormonal contraceptives you do not have a luteal phase in the physiological sense: the cycle flattens out

Where Renzy makes this easy

All of the above only becomes useful if you know what you actually eat. Logging with a photo instead of typing every food means the habit survives exactly the weeks when you least feel like logging — which are these. After two or three cycles you will have your own curve: how much YOUR hunger rises, how much YOUR retention weighs and when it is worth looking at the scale at all.

Take a photo and Renzy does the numbers. No searching, no typing.
