BMI is a screening tool: it does not tell fat from muscle. Guidance, not medical advice.

What is BMI and how is it calculated?

BMI relates weight to height: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². WHO categories: underweight (<18.5), normal (18.5–24.9), overweight (25–29.9), obesity (30+). It is a quick population-level screen but does NOT tell fat from muscle. Pair it with waist circumference and how you feel.

FAQ

What BMI is healthy?

Per the WHO, a BMI of 18.5–24.9 is normal weight. Below 18.5 is underweight; 25–29.9 overweight; 30+ obesity. These are population-level guides, not an individual diagnosis.

Is BMI reliable?

It is a handy screening tool but limited: it does not distinguish fat from muscle. Athletes can read "overweight" with low body fat. Complement it with waist circumference.

How is BMI calculated?

Weight in kg divided by height in metres squared. E.g. 70 kg and 1.75 m: 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9 (normal weight).
